Kim Gilbert - Land's End to John o'Groats
Little old lady walks to Scotland
Kim Gilbert is in fact walking from Land’s End to John o’Groats, or LEJOG for short. Strangely Kim decided to start this venture on April 1st, but do not be fooled this is no joke! (At the time of writing – 11/4/2022), Kim is well on the way to ticking off Cornwall and will soon be venturing over the border into Devon. Kim is walking 10 to 15 miles each day and aims to complete the walk in some three months.
Kim will be completing the walk alone but is being joined from time to time by friends and family along the way. In fact, she is also being joined by a friend Chrissie who is currently working in the Middle East and is supporting Kim by completing LEJOG virtually, but more of this later!
Kim is raising money for Tearfund which is a Christian charity that tackles poverty and injustice and partners with churches in more than 50 of the world’s poorest countries. Kim has currently raised nearly £2000 and as she meets people along the walk, so the donations keep climbing. So, we have Kim and Chrissie both completing a 1200-hundred-mile challenge in different environments. Chrissie tends to run early mornings and walk later in the day to avoid the intense heat, which can be as high as 40°C. Unfortunately, there is not a lot to look at apart from the desert, however interest can be increased by sometimes running in the opposite direction! Chrissie is up to approximately 400 miles and the gritty desert sand wears out running shoes, so Chrissie will soon be replacing her current pair.
Kim on the other hand is coping with the Cornish weather in April, which as we know, can be extremely varied! Kim has even had to shelter on the beach during a hailstorm! To balance this out though, Kim has a beautiful unfolding landscape as she makes her way up through Cornwall, enjoying both coastal views and the spring countryside.
